Walls! Every parcel of land that you own has a limit to the number of objects you can create on it. For this reason it's important to be as frugal as possible with your building. Luckily there are a few tricks you can use to cut down the number of objects your design takes up.
Here I've made a box.
Now, I've made the box hollow. This is a butchering of the 'primitive' concept. By attributing another single piece of information to the box object, its 'hollowness', we can now have an object that has ten faces but is still only described in four pieces of information (height, width, length, 'hollowness').
...and also, the 'cut' value. How much of the box not to use. This give us an 'L' shape or as I like to think of it 'two walls' using a single primitive. To make this out of boxes would require 2 prims. 100% saving \0/.
By applying the same theory to a cylinder (height, radius, hollowness, cut) we can have sexy curvy walls.
Use the curvy bits to make the corners.
The main floor is made up of 8m x 8m squares, which I'm using as a basic unit grid. You can freely colour any object, I've made the floor purple so I can see what I'm doing. The sun will be up in a moment and certain lighting conditions can make it hard to see where one object ends and another begins.
This orange square will form the basic corner unit. When it's done it will be a simple matter to copy it to the other corners.
I'm putting these black stays in for interest, but also to hide the joins between the objects.
Because when we put the masked window texture on, it can look a bit weird at the interface between two objects.
With one example of the corners complete and also a side wall it's a simple matter to copy the objects and make the rest of the walls. The building is taking shape and as I construct it, its purpose becomes more clear. This will be the _blacklibrary, an exhibition space within the Second Life world. In it will be book-like objects that visitors can click on to read the articles in-game that you can find on the website here.
Why? BECAUSE I CAN, dammit!
