Art and Artism - by Ryan C

When I was very young I used to love to draw things from my imagination. My mom decided to give me a sketch book so I could keep all the work I did in it. I never thought of myself as someone who was going to be a great artist one day, so I just drew to draw, not to get better. One day I met this person named Mario. He drew better than anyone I knew, he drew so well I got jealous and that just motivated me to try harder and get better.

Eventually I was drawing every day and took art classes in 7th grade. But one thing that I didn’t expect to happen happened. During a lesson in perspective, my teacher came up to me and told me something. She said that I knew perspective so well that I should try out for classes at the Conservatory of Fine Arts at CAL State LA. This of course gets me really happy because she told me that I was good enough to go into an art school at a college. So I went to the try out and had to draw a whole bunch of objects on a table. I did that pretty easy and got out quick.

Within the next month we got a letter that was a scholarship into the conservatory. I was really happy about this because I knew I would finally be getting art help and could meet other people who loved art just like me. So as the weeks went by I drew new and exotic things like my African mask, and Chinese shirts.

We colored with watercolor, paint, charcoal pencils, watercolor pencils, colored pencils, red charcoal, and just plain pencil. At the end we had a special class for two weeks in a row. We had to draw one of our fellow classmates with a red charcoal block. I drew about six sketches of people.

One time while feeling that the picture I was drawing wasn’t coming out right, I altered it so that the mouth was a Tyranids mouth and I made it look like I was just drawing her. All the classmates and teacher was all watching me drawing this Tyranid. In fact after the class was over the teacher said that the shading I did on the tyranid was the best of all my pictures. And for you who don’t know what Tyranids are, it is a monster from a game called Warhammer 40,000, kind of like mutated dinosaurs with scything talons and guns. I was now very pleased with myself and knew that one day I could become the artist I always wanted to be.

So now each school year I will go to the Conservatory of Fine Arts and take art classes at the college every Saturday. Sure I am giving up a lot of my weekend time but its worth it. The pictures I am putting on here are from my first year of classes and some paintings from home. In October I start my second year of classes.
