String Storyboard - by Mark Nicoll

String is an exciting new short film being made by an inspired and up-and-coming group of filmmakers.

It’s irresistibly charming – sweet, funny and surreal, with striking visual imagery and a twist.
The film is currently in production, the premiere due for Spring 2006 in London.

Homeworld - by Dan Phillips

Um… well, what can I say? Webcomics made me do it! Drawing definitely wasn’t my strong point when I was little, didn’t really get past the ‘draw funny stickfigures’ stage until the 10th grade or something, when some guy on an online forum linked me to a webcomic archive.

Seeing what these kooks came up with every week got me inspired and motivated, so I started drawing myself.

Art and Artism - by Ryan C

When I was very young I used to love to draw things from my imagination. My mom decided to give me a sketch book so I could keep all the work I did in it. I never thought of myself as someone who was going to be a great artist one day, so I just drew to draw, not to get better. One day I met this person named Mario. He drew better than anyone I knew, he drew so well I got jealous and that just motivated me to try harder and get better.

The Great Multi-Tasking Incident - by Ryan C

Last year I attended classes at Cal State LA the Conservatory of Fine Arts. Each week we would get a new teacher and a new type of art. One time we had this teacher named Ms. Greta, who in fact had a Hansel and Gretel type of accent. We had to draw a picture of an ancient African mask with charcoal, which is my favorite medium because of how easy it smudges and shades.

Grain Elevator - by Robin Winter

This is a piece of real life sculpture made from wood canvas and found material. It represents and exhibits the feels and smells of life in the american heart land. Beyond that it shows how the icon of the American heartland and pinnicale of industrialization, the grain elevator, has now become America’s first real site of ruin.

Malice - by John Hildyard

Howdy!

Actually, I had second, third, fourth and possibly fifth thoughts about presenting these. Mostly as I’ve discovered that the last stuff I did was about six years ago. SIX. Where the hell does the time go? I would’ve sworn it was no more than, maybe, two.

Cantina Thread - by Mark Nicoll and the Blackboredettes

Posted in _blackarts by Administrator on the February 24th, 2005

You know what it’s like, a perfectly innocent message board thread suddenly gets mauled and then derailed before it’s even had chance to open one sleepy eye. It’s bound to happen every now and then, even on the least troll-stricken boards.

There are many ways to brake the headlong rush of the thread towards oblivion, but few as creative as that employed by Mark Nicoll when a _blackbored thread innocuously titled
Thief 3 Editor Released threatened to go to the big sticky in the sky. He turned it into a script for an impromptu Star Wars comic.

Homo Depressus: First Degree - by Kieron Gillen and Mark Nicoll

Posted in _blackarts by Administrator on the January 14th, 2005

Homo Depressus was – in fact, perhaps still will be – a collection of short comics.

It’s satirical science fiction. But it hasn’t many laughs. It isn’t even black humour, and far prefers the accusing, puritanical gaze to any other expression. It rarely laughs, and when it does it’s a spat, aggressive “HAH!” rather than anything else vaguely integrating.
